Coding Resources
There are a gazillion apps and programs for students to learn coding. The question is how to get started and what can students do with it.
Please visit our school website to access photos and videos.
Getting started:
Important by-in tip if your teachers are not already using coding in the classroom:
- We started with Scratch, Jr. on iPads both because it is easily accessible and non-threatening to kids (and their teachers) and because we had iPads available.
- Scratch is also free - and our grades 3-5 will use this as well.
- San Francisco has already developed an amazing creative computing curriculum.
- Code.org also has a coding curriculum that you can use to structure lessons for your students.
- Khan Academy also has a lot of coding resources.
- CodeClub has courses to learn code as well (and courses in Raspberry Pi and more)
Important by-in tip if your teachers are not already using coding in the classroom:
- Connect the coding projects that you assign in your space to their curriculum (and add rubrics for assessment if the teachers need additional support to understand that coding interactive projects can be as - or more - valuable as a static powerpoint).
- Create an interactive model of a food chain that will teach about the ecosystem that you are researching.
- Create a model that shows how the Powhatan tribes were able to feed themselves across the seasons.
- Create models of all science topics from 4th grade that your teammates can use to review for the SOL.
